Inside the Role of an Interior Design Assistant
We recently caught up with Emira to see how she’s been getting on in her new role as Design Assistant to Jo, our Creative Director. Whether it's furniture sourcing at Georgian antiques, selecting fabrics selections or creating design presentations, Emira has really got stuck in with our creative team.

What drew you to join our team initially, and what has surprised you most since starting?
I used to visit the showroom for inspiration when I was at university, and I always thought it seemed like such a fun, creative place to work. The projects were always so bold, fun, and colourful, which really drew me in. I didn’t realise how much goes on behind the scenes to bring the projects to life. The level of detail involved is incredible and seeing that up close has been really inspiring.
How has your previous experience in textile design shaped the way you approach this new role?
My background in textile design has helped me a lot. I already knew many interior textile companies, as well as different material compositions and their uses, so I have a good sense of what will work in various spaces. It’s also given me a strong eye for mixing colours, patterns, and textures in a balanced way. And because I’m used to visualising designs in situ, I can quickly picture how ideas will translate into real interiors.
What does a typical day look like for you working alongside Jo and the design team?
My days are different every day, which is something I really enjoy. One day I might be assisting on concepts, putting together mood boards, or going on site visits, and on another, I could be helping with development work or supporting the team on client presentations.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on so far?
One of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on so far has been assisting with a Kit Kemp brief. I’ve loved supporting the team in experimenting with different colours and exploring creative combinations, and I’m especially excited by the opportunity to see a project come to life from concept all the way through to installation.
Who or what inspires your approach to design?
I’m inspired by eclectic design, so I definitely look up to designers like Kelly Wearstler and Kit Kemp. I love how they mix textures, colours, and patterns in unexpected ways, creating spaces that feel both bold and inviting.
Do you have a favourite pattern, colour, or design element that you love to work with?
I don’t have one specific favourite pattern or colour, as each project is unique, but I really enjoy focusing on the small details—whether that’s trims, embellished features, or playful hardware. I love how thoughtful touches, along with pops of colour or interesting textures, can bring a space to life and give it character.
How do you translate your love for interior design into practical solutions for clients?
I assist the team in turning design concepts into practical solutions by helping with material selection, colour schemes, and small details. My focus is on supporting the creation of spaces that are both functional and stylish, ensuring the final design reflects the client’s vision and needs.
How are you finding the balance between hands-on experience and studying towards your KLC qualification?
I’m really enjoying the balance between hands-on experience and studying for my KLC residential interior design course. Being able to apply what I learn to real projects helps reinforce my understanding, while the practical work gives me insights and skills I can bring back to my studies. It’s also great that the course is online and can be accessed at any time, making it easy to fit learning around working at Jeffreys.
What skills or experiences are you most excited to develop in the coming months?
I’m excited to gain more hands-on experience by assisting with site visits, material selection, and space planning, while also developing my SketchUp skills to better support the team in visualizing and communicating design ideas. I’m looking forward to contributing to projects as they progress from concept to installation and helping bring them to life.
If you could redesign any space in the world, what would it be?
If I could redesign any space, it would be a grand castle. I’d transform it for commercial use, blending traditional elements with bold, eclectic touches to create a space that’s both historic and strikingly contemporary. I would want it to be a truly unforgettable experience for anyone who visits.
What’s your favourite thing about working with our team so far?
My favourite thing about working with the team so far is how lovely and approachable everyone is - it makes work really enjoyable. And having Inca greet you every day always brings a smile and brightens the start of the day!
How do you unwind or find inspiration outside of work?
Outside of work, I like to spend time with my friends and family, go thrifting, or do Pilates to unwind. For inspiration, I enjoy scrolling through Pinterest or watching Architectural Digest on YouTube.
